about steven

My career narrative has been and continues to be an exploration of mental health concerns such as anxiety, depression, and a search for meaning. Inspired by my own lived experience of anxiety and depression, I have written three theses on the subject (including my PhD thesis). I have explored these themes in both a research and practice context over the last 40 years.

My focus in my psychology practice is to help people with mental health concerns to lead their best possible lives. Psychotherapy is a space to work through anxiety, depression, loss and feelings of meaninglessness to create new ways of seeing the world and live in new possibilities.

When working in a coaching context, my focus is on transformational anxiety and uncertainty that enables managers, leaders, and professionals to feel the confidence of their expertise and authority.

dr steven segal, psychologist and MGSM lecturer

I registered as a psychologist in 1998. In the same year, I began lecturing at the Macquarie Graduate School of Management (MGSM), Sydney. For over twenty years I taught postgraduate MBA students. I taught a range of courses including Foundations of Management Thought, Leadership, Psychology, and Leading with a Global Mindset. I developed and taught an experiential course on Executive Coaching, one of the first in an Australian university context. Students repeatedly commented that my courses impacted on their way of thinking, seeing and being both professionally and personally.

In my practice, I use a wide range of psychotherapies and coaching approaches including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Acceptance Commitment Therapy, Rational Emotive Therapy, Psychodynamic Therapy and Existential Therapy. Because of my academic and experiential background, I bring philosophical, sociological, and management perspectives to my practice.
